Plone Site Administration

This is a beginner's course designed for folks who want to learn how to manage their Plone site from the ground up, using modern tools and techniques from the Python and Zope communities, e.g. Distribute, Pip, Buildout.

You will learn:

  • Python installation:
    • How to use the system Python for fun and profit.
    • Multi-platform Python installation: Mac OS X 10.6, Windows 7, Ubuntu Linux 9.10.
    • Installation of Distribute, Pip, and Buildout.
    • Using Buildout to install Python.
    • Using Buildout to install Plone.
  • How to manage your site with Buildout and add-ons from plone.org and the Python Package Index:
    • Customize navigation features and add new content types.
    • Add new themes.
    • Authenticate against LDAP.
    • Backup the database.
    • Add caching and load balancing software.
    • Manage security.
  • Explore the future:
    • More eggs in the basket with Plone 4 and Zope 2.12.
    • Plone served with WSGI.
    • Plone themed with XDV.
  • And more!

This class is based on material from the forthcoming Plone 3.3 Site Administration book (due June 2010).

We will cover 8 chapters of material in 8 hours, and make every effort to ensure no Plonista is left behind.

Requirements

Attendees will be expected to bring laptops, preferably installed with one of the operating systems listed above, but that is not a strict requirement.

Target audience

Ideal candidates for this class are: system administrators, content editors, Plone platform-installer users, and anyone who wants to learn more about modern Plone site operation.

If bootstrapping and running a buildout confuses you, you will leave this class with a better understanding of how it all works.

Cancellation Policy

Students who cancel prior to May 17 will receive a 50% refund. After May 17 no refunds will be given.

ACLARK.NET, LLC reserves the right to cancel the course if there are fewer than 10 attendees. In the event of cancellation all students registered and paid in full will receive a 100% refund. Please contact us with any questions regarding terms & conditions.

About The Instructor

Alex Clark is a founding partner and lead consultant at ACLARK.NET, LLC. He has been developing Plone sites and teaching Plone since late 2004. He is the author of Plone 3.3 Site Administration, and is very interested in lowering the bar for folks new to Plone. In addition, he is the executive director of ZPUGDC, INC a non-profit that serves the needs of Python developers in the DC and surrounding areas.
